It's mostly the brand. Kinda like when you see HBO on a TV show box set, you're more likely to sit up and pay attention than if you see, I dunno, ABC or Fox. They have a much higher rate of consistency than just about any other DVD publisher I can think of.
Aside from just carrying many of the greatest older and foreign movies in history, as well as new movies from some of the better up-and-coming visionary directors in movies today, they just do the treatment up right. Great restoration, correct aspect ratios, lots of special features (and ones that are usually interesting to watch, at least to me). Stuff that makes big movie nerds like us happy.
If you want to see movies by Kurosawa, Tati, Fellini, Bergman, Bunuel, Wes Anderson, PT Anderson, or any number of other fantastic directors young and old, Criterion often has the best (or only) game in town.
(Keep in mind for all of this that I don't have a Blu-Ray player, so I have no idea how they stack up in those comparison or if they have a Blu-Ray program in development.) |

I was curious, I just picked up a used copy of Hamlet with Laurence Olivier, Criterion Collection. I was just curious. Thank-you Dave. _________________ What is your major malfunction, numbnuts? Didn't Mommy and Daddy show you enough attention when you were a child? |

No problem, bro!
It's not a dumb question, really... Criterion DVDs, cool as they are, tend to be WAY overpriced ($30-$35 range, and it ain't even Blu-Ray!). So I'd be wanting to know what the hell was so special about them, too. |

I watched it, and didn't see any REAL difference. It wasn't that big of an expense, I got it for 99 cents. My local Blockbuster is closing it's doors, and running killer sales. _________________ What is your major malfunction, numbnuts?
